In 2026, Johnson House Historic Site commemorated the 20th Annual Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival along Germantown Avenue. The free, family-friendly festival brought together music, historical interpretation, art, entrepreneurship, and community connection.

Rooted near one of the nation’s most important Underground Railroad sites, the festival links freedom history to contemporary culture in the heart of Northwest Philadelphia.

What does Juneteenth commemorate?
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom to enslaved Black people there, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, it is an opportunity to remember emancipation and reflect on the ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality.
